This series is all about building a strong foundation in samba, with a focus on classic Rio-style (Samba no Pé) samba technique. Together, we’ll break down the essential base step, foundational footwork, and signature hip movement while developing greater body awareness and control.
You’ll also explore arm placement, core body movement, musicality, and simple transitions that bring your samba to life. Each week builds progressively, giving you the tools to feel confident, grounded, and expressive in your movement.
At the end of the series, students will have the opportunity to participate in an optional showcase performance for capoeira students at VivaArts — a fun and supportive way to celebrate your progress!

Kit’s dance journey began as a young adult exploring diverse styles, including Modern and Belly Dance — but everything shifted when she discovered Afro-Brazilian dance and music at university. At that moment, she knew Brazilian culture and art would become a lifelong passion. The power, rhythm, and spirit of Samba captured her heart completely.
Since then, Kit has traveled to Bahia to connect with the roots of Samba and Afro-Brazilian culture, and she continues to train with professional dancers from Rio de Janeiro. She has had the incredible honor of participating in Carnival in Rio with various samba schools — an electrifying experience that continues to inspire and fuel her work.
Since 2019, Kit has served as Artistic Dance Director and Co-President of VamoLá, a Brazilian Drum & Dance Ensemble in Seattle. In this role, she leads rehearsals, cultivates community, and actively works to bring Brazilian artists to Seattle to share their brilliance and cultural traditions.
Kit has performed with Bahia in Motion, VamoLá, Raiz Brazil, and Show Brazil, and she is deeply passionate about sharing this art form through teaching — from children’s summer camps to dynamic workshops and local festivals for adults.
For Kit, Samba is more than dance — it is culture, resilience, joy, and community. She cannot wait to share its foundations, history, and vibrant energy with you at Viva Arts!
